Strawberries ~ Opening Late-May. This cool rainy weather has slowed the fields from ripening. Be sure to Follow us on Twitter @TheFarmerSays and Facebook (link on the right of our site) to be one of the first to hear when the fields open.  The season is about 4 weeks so we expect to be picking through early June.

We grow Chandler berries which come in a bit later than some varieties but are heavy producers.

Here are some Tips for Strawberry Picking at Great Country Farms

  1. Strawberries ripen over time so supplies can vary daily based on the weather and number of folks picking.  We update our website and facebook pages daily during the season so you can check on availability the day you plan to visit.
  2. If you plan to arrive in the afternoon on weekends, feel free to call the farm line at 540-554-2073 for updates throughout the day.  We do get crowded on weekends so the best picking is first thing in the morning.
  3. Dogs are allowed on the farm but for health and safety reasons are not permitted in the pick your own fields. Dress appropriately. Consider wearing long sleeves if the serrated edges of the leaves tend to irritate your arms. Access to fields is generally easy, but appropriate shoes or sandals for outdoor walking and a hat for sun may also be good ideas.
  4. Strawberries are fragile and  need to be kept cool.  Feel free to bring a cooler with ice to store your berries in if you plan to stay and play on the farm after picking.
  5. Dress for Picking.  Sun Hats, closed-toe shoes, and For PYO, dress small children in red or dark colors. Then you won’t need to worry about the inevitable juice stains.
  6. Our farm is large!  Hayrides take guests to and from the strawberry fields so do plan for some extra time to sit back and enjoy the ride.  This helps us guide guests to the proper picking locations and move guests out of the fields quickly and safely in the event of sudden spring stormBlack Raspberries ~ mid-June to end of June.

These rare treats have a short season and go very quickly.  Be sure to visit  in June for peak picking conditions.
