Field Trips

deb on wagonWith 19 years of farm field trip experience and capacity for whole grades to come all at once, Great Country Farms is the place to meet Virginia Standards of Learning(SOL) requirements and enjoy every minute of fun on the farm (download full list of SOL fulfillments here).

On our real working farm, children have the opportunity to see how produce grows, meet our friendly farm animals and enjoy a hayride tour of the farm. As time permits, your group is welcome to exercise their gross motor skills in our farm play area with 3 giant 60 foot slides, pedal carts, 2500 sq foot giant Pumpkin Jumping Pillow and 4 thought provoking mazes to challenge children of all ages. Our Farm Animal Barnyard is filled with teachable moments and signs with farm animal facts.

Our field trips are seasonally based with a focus on the fruit of the season such as strawberries in spring and pumpkins in the fall. Our summer field trips feature summer fruits such as peaches and blackberries.

The average American generates over 5lbs of trash a day. At Great Country Farms, your students will learn ways to recycle, making lunch an educational experience as their trash is used to feed our worm composting, farm compost pile and recycling bins. We hope this thought provoking experience will expand how we all use our resources!

picnic lunchWith each of our field trips, there is no charge for bus drivers and teachers. We are here rain or shine, and there are several covered areas during the tour to accommodate your group. Should the weather be questionable on the day of your trip, please call us that morning to discuss options for the day.

Let us provide a hot dog lunch for your group! No lugging coolers and boxes of lunches to and from the bus. Save time going back and forth from the bus and spend it enjoying your field trip and educational experience! Hot Dog Lunch with any Tour: Lunch includes an all beef hot dog, seasonal fruit, large water, carrots & a home-baked trans fat free cookie.

Field Trip FAQs

  1. How long does the field trip take?
Tours take about 90 minutes to rotate among the field trip stations. Groups having lunch at the farm should plan at least 2 hours

  2. How do you charge for home school groups?
We welcome home school groups and love to spend more time with the children since home school schedules are often more flexible. We recommend afternoon tours for home school groups as the farm is less crowded especially for fall tours. We include 1 parent/teacher per 15 home school students free with a field trip.
