Saturday, June 20: Ever wonder how the Beekeeper gets the honey out of the honeycomb? Come meet Beekeeping expert, Bill Bundy, on Saturday, June 20th and find out. Bundy has headed the Loudoun Beekeepers Association for years, teaches classes in beekeeping and manages all the hives at Great Country Farms which are essential to pollinating the orchards and vegetables for the farm’s CSA and U-pick fruits & vegetables. Bundy will discuss beekeeping and demonstrate how honey is extracted from the comb at 10am - 12pm. Guests are invited to u-pick tart cherries for $3.99/lb which will be in season and are one of the crops the honeybees make possible at GCF. Honey from the hives at GCF is available in our Farm Market for purchase as well
According to the Obama Administration’s Federal Pollinator Strategy announced in May of 2015, one-third of our food supply--the fruits, vegetables and nuts we eat-- are pollinated by bees, but the current bee population in the US is now less than half of what it was in 1945. The importance of the honeybee in our food chain has come to the forefront and this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about honeybees and what you can do to help sustain them.
Sunday, June 21: All Dad wants for Father’s Day is to relax and fish with the family -- Mom is welcome too! Treat Dad to a fun-filled weekend with BBQ and catch-and-release fishing. Compete in our Fish-a-Rama contest, fishing for catfish, bass, and blue gill in our stocked ponds. Prizes are on the line for the largest fish hooked and the most fish caught during the power hour. Bring your own pole and gear to fish (no drag hooks), and we will have worms for sale in our Farm Market. The Roosteraunt will feature beef burgers and hotdogs, our own cider pork BBQ with classic coleslaw, kettle corn, and our infamous cider donuts. Hand dipped Virginia-made ice cream is the perfect ending to a day well spent with Dad and family.
We are thrilled to welcome Bryan Kelly, a 1994 BASS Master Qualifier and long-time Potomac River fishing guide for a spin-tackle demonstration and a fly-casting clinic at this year's event. Bryan is the CEO of the Anglers Inn in Harpers Ferry, and he has been featured on The Outdoor Channel on Curtis Flemings Fly Rod Chronicles. Come spend some time with this accomplished author, artist, and designer of flies for small mouth bass, and up your fishing game.
